Honesty!

I went for an interview earlier in the year, and during the feedback session the lady told me that the main fault with the interview was that I am too honest!!!! (NO COMMENT)

Funny enough she is not first person to tell me that and I am of the opinion that companies need to change the way they recruit! If I start listing all the nutters I’ve had interview me….

Anyway, thinking about all these interviews got me thinking about my first ever interview; I was 16.
To be honest, that interview was doomed from the start- I was late because I relied on people’s directions so I got lost and was 10 minutes late (Thank God for www.tfl.gov.uk  Journey planner, now I’m never late).

Then the alarm on my Nokia 3310 started going off- the thing was, my phone was off so I didn’t expect my phone to make any sound so wasn’t listening for it. I didn’t hear it, and the interviewer didn’t tell me about it until the end of the interview (now when I go for interviews I switch my phone off and take the battery out)

To top it all up, they asked me about my future aspirations, the conversation went like this:

Interviewer: So what are your future aspirations?
Tiny: Well I hope to study philosophy or History in university but my career goal is to be a barrister.
Interviewer: Hmmm why philosophy, why not study law?
Tiny: I’ve always been fascinated about philosophy and history excites me.
Interviewer: Hmmm so why Barrister and not a Solicitor.
Tiny: Well, as a Solicitor I’ll have to deal with people, and to be honest can’t stand most people and as barrister I would have fewer dealings with the general public.

SHAKING MY HEAD

For months I wondered why I did not get a call from them, not even one telling me I wasn’t successful.  I was really upset by it, until it dawned on me that erm I was applying for a job as a sales assistant for a major retail company so erm one of the main characteristics they’ll want is someone who likes people or at least can pretend to like people.

So yeah maybe I haven’t outgrown that; but surely nothing wrong with honesty. Would it not be better for my potential employer to know straight from the beginning that I am a Spice Girls fan and would feign sickness to get off work to go to their concert at their next reunion!??!!
